Tempo* (2024) Barcelona
A platform that offers the complete musical scene in Barcelona, day by day, from the small venues in el Gótico, to the iconic places like Razzmatazz. After this, an interactive ‘corner’ was produced to showcase a glimpse of the platform.
This proyect involved the creation of an business idea through the theme of ‘life, labour and leisure’. We were a team of 9 multidisciplinary desginers, from the sectors of spatial design, interactive, graphic and product. We had to join forces to create something new and present it in a professional way.
This being the last proyect we were going to do for university, we wanted it to involve a theme we all liked and were going to have fun doing. We ended up choosing the theme of live music in Barcelona.
The music scene in Barcelona faces significant challenges due to mass tourism and real estate speculation, which have led to the closure of numerous iconic venues and the displacement of local culture. For 11 years, no new licences have been issued to open new venues, and in the last 20 years, more than 200 have disappeared.
Additionally, the concentration of nightlife in specific areas, such as the streets of Tuset and Aribau, the poorly named Poblenou Gulf Triangle, and the seafront, limits equitable access to live music throughout the city, with these areas accumulating 80% of Barcelona’s nightlife. This threatens the diversity and vibrancy of the music scene, endangering Barcelona’s cultural heritage and identity.

In response to the problem of imbalance in Barcelona’s nightlife areas due to the inability to issue new licences, our proposal focuses on providing equitable visibility to existing venues. This aims to balance the scale and prevent overcrowding in areas like the mentioned Gulf Triangle. However, our proposal goes beyond that.
Our digital platform will serve as a bridge between the public and the wide range of music events in Barcelona. We firmly believe in establishing a triangular connection between artists, venues, and the audience to enhance musical diversity and address the aforementioned issues.
The main goal of our platform is to offer an accessible and organic tool for anyone to easily discover music events of their interest in the city. Through various filters and search options, we aim to provide an intuitive and enjoyable user experience diversifying users’ choices and encouraging exploration of new alternatives.
My main challenge as spatial designer, was the creation of the ‘corner’ where the idea would be presented on the last day of the semester.

A ‘live’ experience for TEMPO
In the pursuit of creating an immersive and engaging experience for our audience, TEMPO has devised an innovative presentation concept tailored for a compact space, blending the excitement of musical exploration with the vibrant tapestry of Barcelona's local events. We were asked to present in a corner made of two boards that measure 75 cm by 220 cm. This unique and dynamic element serves as both an informative tool and a visual attraction, an interactive tool to captivate the attention of our audience.
The right segment of the corner is dedicated to an interactive board, poised to spark curiosity and participation. The question posed to the audience is simple yet thought-provoking: "What genre of music would you like to explore this weekend?" The interactive board features an array of stickers, each distinctively coloured to represent various music genres. Attendees are encouraged to select their preferred genre by affixing half of the sticker onto the board, which exclusively showcases the vibrant array of colours associated with different musical genres.
The introduction of TEMPO will be set on the left board, where a set of real challenges and a short but informative explanation will be displayed, and our proposal for the issue will be showcased. A computer and a phone will be set for people to see a preview of the look of the platform.
As participants engage with the interactive board, the immersive experience unfolds. The act of choosing a genre becomes a tangible and visually striking contribution to the overall presentation. The vibrant colours collectively create a dynamic and visually appealing mosaic, representing the diverse musical tastes and preferences of the audience.
This interactive corner not only showcases the innovative spirit of TEMPO but also serves as a memorable and shareable experience for participants. The stickers become personal invitations, prompting attendees to embark on a musical journey tailored to their tastes, fostering a sense of anticipation and excitement about the rich array of events Barcelona has to offer on that specific date, which was the 15th of March 2024.
